Walter E. Smith

Walter E. Smith, born July 27, 1940, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, August 7th, 2026 at 10:46 p.m. while a patient at Valley West Hospital in Sandwich, Illinois. He was 86 years old.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Inez Smith, and his brothers Robert, Raymond, and Willie. Their memory remained close to him throughout his life.

For over 66 years, Walter was the devoted husband of Sara Ella (Galey) Smith. Together, they built a life grounded in love, loyalty, and shared adventure. For more than 25 years, Walter and Sara were proud snowbirds, enjoying their home in The Villages, Florida, where they spent winters surrounded by sunshine and friends, returning each summer to Sandwich and Somonauk, Illinois.

Walter was a man who could solve any problem placed in front of him. He had a remarkable ability to fix anything-often with great creativity and an instinctive understanding of how things worked. He improvised with whatever tools or parts he had on hand, and his family and friends can recount countless examples of his ingenuity and resourcefulness. Whether it was a household repair, a mechanical challenge, or something that seemed impossible, Walter always found a way to make it work.

He found joy in the outdoors and was a deer hunter who cherished the camaraderie of family and friends even more than the hunt itself. A gifted woodworker, he spent countless hours crafting pieces that reflected his patience and skill. He delighted in making jelly, entering many of his creations at the Sandwich Fair-often returning home with blue ribbons that brought him quiet pride.

Walter also had a lifelong love of music. He collected records, cassette tapes, and CDs, and enjoyed listening to them on the various players he found while thrifting or attending garage and estate sales. Discovering a new treasure and hearing familiar songs play through a newly restored device brought him simple, lasting joy.

From his lanai in Florida, Walter loved watching the birds, especially the purple martins. He built a martin house and took great pleasure in observing their migration and nesting each year, a peaceful ritual that connected him to the rhythms of nature.

Walter worked at Caterpillar Tractor Company from 1959 until his retirement in 1998, dedicating nearly four decades to a career marked by reliability and hard work.

He was a loving father to Cheryl (Scott) Johns of Howell, Michigan, and Angela (Steve) Copeland of Sandwich, Illinois. He was a proud grandfather to Nicole (Alex) Gargano of Mason, Michigan; Jeremiah Johns (Bridget Bonk) of East Lansing, Michigan; Katelyn (Colin) Stahl of Sandwich, Illinois; and Thomas (Lacey) Beardsley of Sandwich, Ilinois. His joy multiplied with each great-grandchild Rowan and Adalena Gargano, and Vivian and Lila Jane Stahl. He was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his newest great-grandson, Gordon Walter Beardsley, due this month.

Walter is also survived by his sisters, Catherine (Billie Rae) Ulrey of Marshall, Illinois, and Betty (Jerry) White of Champaign, Illinois. Their lifelong bond was filled with shared stories, laughter, and love.

Walter will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his steady presence, and the deep love he carried for his family. His legacy lives on in the generations he nurtured, the craftsmanship he left behind, the music he cherished, the birds he watched, and the countless problems he solved with creativity and heart.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 - 6:00 P.M. on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Beverage Family Funeral Home, 104 Terry St. Sandwich, IL 60548. A graveside service will be held at 12:00 P.M. on August 14, 2026 at Martinsville City Cemetery in Martinsville, IL. Arrangements were entrusted to Beverage Family Funeral Home.
