Ronald R. Schultz

Ronald Ray Schultz, affectionately known as "Catfish" to many and "Papa" to those he held dearest, passed away peacefully in his home on May 31, 2026, in Sandwich, Illinois. He was 92 years old. Born on October 11, 1933, in Sandwich, Illinois, Ronald lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his work, and his passions.

Ronald proudly served his country during the Korean War as a member of the United States Navy. Stationed aboard a destroyer escorting an aircraft carrier, he exemplified courage and commitment during his time in service.

Following his military service, Ronald embarked on a remarkable career at Caterpillar in Montgomery, Illinois. Over the course of 52 years, he worked as a tool design engineer, beginning before the plant was even built and continuing nearly until its closure. His expertise and craftsmanship were unparalleled; he earned the distinction of being the last tool designer at Caterpillar globally to draw by hand—a testament to his precision and dedication to his craft. After retiring from Caterpillar, Ronald channeled his skills into a new venture: Tee-to-Green Golf, where he built and repaired golf clubs with the same meticulous care that defined his engineering career.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ronald found immense joy in hobbies that reflected his love for creativity and connection. An avid golfer and fisherman—particularly passionate about catfishing—he spent countless hours enjoying the outdoors. His nickname "Catfish" was a nod to this cherished pastime. Ronald also had a talent for cooking, took pride in special building projects, especially floats & costumes for parades and events for his children and grandchildren, creating lasting memories through these heartfelt endeavors.

Family was at the center of Ronald’s life. He shared nearly 56 wonderful years of marriage with Lynda, the love of his life. Together they built a legacy of love and devotion that extended to their children: Jim (Dawn) Schultz, Dawn (Kevin) Ryan, Laura (Gary) Loehmann, and Adam (Jamie) Schultz. Ronald was also a proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren; Mackenzie, Lexi, Carrington, Bailey, Connor, Jack, Riley, Henry, Marcella, Hazel, and Finley. He is also survived by his sister, Sandra (Darrell) Owen, nephew John Owen and niece Julie (Fred) Owen and their children. His deep affection for his family was evident in every aspect of his life.

Ronald was predeceased by his parents Raymond Schultz and Frieda (Wormland) Schultz but leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him. Known as "Chief" by some but always "Papa" to those closest to him, he will be remembered for his warmth, humor, and unwavering love.

A man of many talents and boundless generosity of spirit, Ronald touched countless lives through both his work and personal pursuits. May his memory bring comfort to those who loved him most.
