James “Jim” William McGrail

Jim was born on December 23, 1948, in Dixon, Illinois, the second child of Charles J. McGrail and Mary Rita (Cheeseman) McGrail. As a young boy, Jim loved the outdoors. He was known to hop on his bike with a friend and head down to the Rock River, where they would often spend hours fishing. Their mothers would have to look for them long after dark. Ever the mischievous boy, Jim found just enough trouble throughout his youth. As he reached adulthood, it was suggested that perhaps he should join the Army.

In January 1967, just after his 18th birthday, Jim and his best friend took the long bus ride to Fort Rucker, Alabama, for basic training. Afterward, he was stationed at Fort Meade, Maryland, where he trained as a helicopter mechanic. He put to use the skills he had developed in his youth while tinkering with old cars and keeping them running.

After serving in the Army, Jim began his railroad career, first working as a brakeman in Belvidere, Illinois, and later as a signal maintainer in West Chicago. He dedicated 39 years to the railroad before retiring. It was in West Chicago that Jim met Janet, his wife of 50 years. They were married in the fall of 1975 and soon moved to Malta, Illinois, where their two daughters, Jenniffer and Jackie, were born. In 1980, expecting another child and needing a larger home, they moved to their forever home in Ashton, Illinois. It was there that they welcomed their two sons, Jamie and, four years later, Jason, completing their family.

Jim and Janet's love of the outdoors was passed down to their family and became a cherished part of their lives. Summers were filled with tent camping and fishing trips in Missouri at Grandpa Bailey's place. Of course, Grandma always made sure her chocolate chip cookie jar was kept full, a favorite treat for Jim and his family.

Jim eventually got his dream fishing boat, quite an upgrade from his first purchase after leaving the military: a simple rowboat that he tied up along the Rock River. Over the years, that dream boat became the setting for countless memorable fishing trips with family. There may not always have been many fish caught, but there was always plenty of laughter, stories, and time spent together. Those moments became some of the memories his family will treasure most.

Family was truly the most important part of Jim's life. Watching his children grow and flourish into adulthood brought him immense joy, until his grandchildren came along and stole his heart. Being a father and grandfather, and helping his children and grandchildren along the way, were among Jim's greatest gifts and greatest sources of pride.

There was not much Jim could not fix, and everyone knew they could turn to him when something needed repairing or building. He was a little saddened over the years when everyone started turning to YouTube instead of asking him for help. Jim taught his children and grandchildren the importance of having the right tool for the job. He showed them how to build, use, and fix things and was always willing to lend them the tools they needed to get the job done. But he made one thing very clear: when they were finished, those tools had to be returned!

Jim's sense of humor, crazy antics, unforgettable smile, and endless jokes will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His memory will be cherished, and he will be deeply missed by all. During his final months, the love and support of his family brought him great comfort and peace.

Jim is survived by his wife, Janet; daughters Jenniffer (Rick) McBride of Ashton, Illinois, and Jackie (Brian) Fransen of Ashton, Illinois; sons Jamie (Sara) McGrail of Poplar Grove, Illinois, and Jason McGrail of Dixon, Illinois; grandchildren Brandon, Kyle, and Nathan McBride, Nora and Charlie McGrail, and Henry Fransen; sister Maureen Marzano of Colorado; brothers Tom (Vickie) McGrail of Oklahoma, Mike (Gayla) McGrail of Minnesota, and Richard (Julie) McGrail of Illinois; and brothers-in-law Les (Joan) Bailey of Wisconsin and Kevin (Pat) Bailey of Illinois, along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mary; a brother and sister who died in infancy; his parents-in-law, Robert and Leona Bailey; and his sisters-in-law, Nancy, Susan, and Carol.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at Beverage-Lyons Family Funeral Homes in Ashton, Illinois, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ashton, with a viewing beginning at 9:00 a.m. and the service at 10:00 a.m. Military burial will follow at Ashton Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the church.

Friends and family are asked to dress in blue jean casual attire for both the visitation and funeral services. Those who knew Jim knew he would say, "Blue jeans are good enough," and for him, that meant blue jeans and suspenders.
