George William Van Kampen, of Sandwich, Illinois, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2026, at the age of 97— fourteen years after the passing of the love of his life, Rose (nee Wiersema).
Born on April 17, 1928, in Chicago, George lived a full and vibrant life marked by dedication to his family, a strong work ethic, and a wonderful sense of humor. After retiring and selling his business, George and Rose embraced their love of travel, visiting all 50 states and many parts of Canada together, creating cherished memories along the way.
George was known for his deep love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as his sharp card-playing skills. He truly loved life and treasured the time he spent with family and friends. The phrase printed on the front of his truck, “el hombre basura,” reflected his humor and easygoing nature, and his openness to everyone he met.
George was a man of faith who loved singing in the church choir, and his warm, booming voice was a presence many will always remember. Whether he was bowling a perfect game with his unforgettable big hook or traveling with Rose to many ABC tournaments, he brought joy and smiles to everything he did.
He is survived by his sister, Grace (Auntie Toots) Tillema; his children, George (Petra) Van Kampen, Cheryl (Jim) Barry, Pat (Alan) Bilthouse, Cindy Van Kampen, and Nancy (Dave) Stell; 16 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rose; his parents; his brother, Jim; and his daughter-in-law, Joan.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 9 at 10:00 a.m. at the Federated Church, 403 N. Main St. Sandwich, IL 60548. A visitation will precede the service from 9:00 to 10:00 at the church. Luncheon to follow the service.
Interment will follow at 1:45 pm at Chapel Hill Gardens West in Oakbrook Terrace, IL.
George will be deeply missed by his family and the many friends whose lives he touched.
