Douglas L. Carter

Douglas Larry Carter, 79, of Sandwich, Illinois, passed away unexpectedly as a result of an accident on Monday, Sept. 14, 2026.

Doug was born on June 23, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, to Larry and Millie Carter. He lived most of his life in Sandwich, IL, where he built a life filled with family, friends, work, sports, cars, and countless memories.

Doug loved all sports and played football, basketball, and track throughout his high school years. He was voted Most Valuable Player in basketball during his senior year and held the school record for the most points scored in a single game for many years. He graduated from Sandwich High School in 1965. He then attended Western Illinois University until he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He proudly served in the Vietnam War.

After returning home, Doug began working for Gord Plastics, where he worked for over 50 years until his recent retirement. His dedication to his work was a reflection of the commitment and pride he brought to everything he did.

Doug had a passion for antique cars, especially Corvettes. He always kept his cars spotless and had the cleanest garage around. He proudly ran the antique car show at the Sandwich Fair for many years. His love of automobiles was one of the many things that brought him joy. Doug had many hobbies and interests. He enjoyed collecting toy cars, tinkering with automobiles, and putting together puzzles. He also enjoyed working on all home projects, big or small. He could fix anything, earning him the special nickname “Mr. Fix-It” from his grandchildren. He was always willing to lend a hand and find a way to make things work.

Family was at the heart of Doug's life. He spent many nights at his grandkids' sporting events, cheering them on and being there for the moments that mattered. His presence, patience, and willingness to help created memories that his family will treasure for years to come.

Doug enjoyed watching the Chicago Bears and was an avid NASCAR fan, with a Miller Light always in hand. He was also a proud member of the Sandwich Moose and American Legion.

Doug married the love of his life, Nancy, on November 14, 1987. Together, through their 39 years they shared a life filled with family, love, and memories. Nancy was an important part of Doug's life, and together they shared many years as husband and wife. Their marriage brought together a family that Doug loved deeply. Through the years, Nancy and Doug shared the everyday moments that make up a life together, as well as the many memories created with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Doug was proud of his family and cherished the time he spent with them. His love for Nancy and his family was an important part of who he was and the life he built.

Doug is survived by his wife, Nancy Carter; his four stepchildren, Tracy (Dawn) Rogers, Sean (Diane) Rogers, Kelly (Pam) Rogers, and Sarah (Kevin) Rogers; 12 grandchildren, Ashley (Rob), Gregery (Sydney), Bradly, Chad (Delaney), Jenna (Caden), Becky (Preston), Jack (Cadence), Savanna, Carter, Spencer, Holden, and Greysen; eight great-grandchildren, Addy, Aria, Audrey, Rowland, Gregery Jr., Gavin, Marley, and Rosie; one sister, Bonnie (Sherm) Morgan of Hampshire, IL; two nieces, Diane (Bill) Angelo and Laurie Morgan; two great-nieces, Morgan and Isabella; one great-nephew, Derek; and one brother-in-law, Frank Rogers of Larsen, Wisconsin.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Larry and Millie Carter; one baby brother, Randy Carter; and one sister, Kaye Rogers.

Doug will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. We will always remember his kind heart, patient spirit, his willingness to fix anything, his love of cars and sports, and most of all, his love for his family. His memory will live on through the many lives he touched and the countless memories he leaves behind.

A visitation will be held on Monday, September 21, 2026 from 10:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. at Beverage Family Funeral Home, 104 Terry St. Sandwich, IL 60548. A funeral service will take place at 12:00 P.M. at the funeral home with a graveside service to follow out to Oak Ridge Cemetery in Sandwich.
